As December settles into the Chamonix Valley, festive lights twinkle across town and the Christmas spirit is well and truly alive. Whether you are visiting for winter sports, family time or simply to enjoy the atmosphere, Chamonix at Christmas offers something genuinely special.
With its authentic village feel, strong local traditions and dramatic Alpine backdrop this is a time when the valley comes together and visitors are warmly invited to join in.

One of the highlights of December is the Chamonix Christmas Market, held in the town centre at Place du Triangle de l’Amitié. Wooden chalets line the square and offer a lovely selection of local crafts, handmade gifts and regional products. You will also find plenty of festive treats including vin chaud, crêpes and sweet seasonal specialities.
It is an ideal place to browse for Christmas presents, enjoy a drink with friends or simply soak up the atmosphere with family. The market usually runs from 18 December to 4 January and is open daily from late morning into the evening.
Christmas in Chamonix is about much more than the market. Throughout December the town hosts a variety of festive events that bring the streets to life.
In the week leading up to Christmas there are parades, live music and concerts across the valley.
Christmas Eve is especially magical. The town fills with music and carols and many local restaurants serve traditional French Christmas Eve dinners. Father Christmas also makes a special appearance adding to the festive atmosphere that continues late into the evening.
There is also a wide range of children’s events taking place at the Maison des Artistes throughout December. These festive workshops and activities are ideal for younger visitors and families. You can view the full programme here.
December is packed with seasonal activities that add something extra to a winter holiday in Chamonix. Torchlit ski descents organised by local ski schools create a beautiful evening spectacle on the slopes while sports fans can enjoy the ice hockey gala match on 23 December at the Patinoire Richard Bozon where the local team Les Pionniers play their festive fixture.
For families the Montenvers Christmas Train on 27 and 28 December offers a magical journey to the Mer de Glace with children’s activities and a visit from Father Christmas. Visitors can also explore further up the valley at the Vallorcine Christmas Market, a smaller traditional market with artisan stalls and local food.
Together these events help make December a wonderful time to visit the Chamonix Valley.
